Social construction is based on social norms and the rules are constructed by society that exists solely because people agree to behave as if it exists, or agree to follow certain conventional rules. Some examples include things like games, money, language, school grades, titles, governments, universities, corporations and other institutions. Social constructs include class, race, gender, religion, sexuality, morality, and memory. Agency is based on a person’s awareness of originating and performing on their own actions in the society they live in. To my understanding agency is basically individuals acting independently and making their own free choices. The structure versus agency debate can be understood as an issue of socialization against autonomy in determining whether an individual acts as a free agent or in a manner dictate by social structure. Meaning systems are similar and can be related to social constructivism because with meaning systems people let their experiences and environment shape them. The more a person is exposed to a certain situation the more the person will find it okay to do or not okay to do.
