ghaddam tells us (p288) that social identity theory takes the position that “humans are motivated to achieve a social identity that is both positive and distinct.” However, in Chapter 15 he tells us that humans readily conform to group norms. In your view are the ideas associated with social identity theory contradictory to the ones associated with the conformity concept, or are they compatible? Explain.
The social identity theory depicts the identity of the individual to be derived from the membership of a societal group and the concept of conformity depicts an individual adopting the norms of a group and applying that to their behavior. The two ideas are compatible as it shows how an individual perceives themselves from the groups they surround themselves with whether their identity is derived from the society and/or adopted from the society. When mogahaddem states “humans are motivated to achieve a social identity that is both positive and distinct,” It is a combination of deriving, adopting, and individuality that results in a positive and distinct social identity and we are motivated to keep a balance between these identity influencing factors.

Hi
Nice work and explanation. However, can you elaborate bit more on the concept of why human beings are motivated to keep balance between social identity and conformity.
Thanks Ali
