I believe social constructionists provide a normative explanation more than a causal explanation. This is because causal science focuses on cause and effect. Why something causes another, or why an action causes a reaction. On the other hand, normative science focuses on cultures, norms and beliefs of people and alternative explanation as to why certain things happen. This is important to social constructionists as they try to find answers to why and how a norm or a concept is constructed in society. An example would be marriage. Marriage is socially constructed. The way different cultures view marriage is different. Some cultures believe gay marriage is wrong while others accept it. They follow norms and beliefs associated with their culture.
