The case of the 65 year old was essentially she had a device in her brain that would stimulate a section of her brain, however it accidentally triggered a neighboring section which wasn't part of her treatment as a result she started to cry and talked in a very similar way that other people who are very depressed would talk, even including a desire to end her life. What makes this case strange was that prior to her crying she was enjoying herself as she would normally would in her daily life. After turning the device off, after several minutes her feelings of sadness stopped.
The point that is being made with this case is that there are certain parts of the brain which are seemingly directly responsible for the emotional states we experience and our feelings can be directly rooted, categorized and mapped as they were able to stimulate the same spot producing the same results. Emotion precedes feelings, as emotion has been previously defined as the bodily reactions to particular stimuli, and seeing to our case here, she experienced and reported FEELING sad after some time was spent weeping.
The timing is being relied upon, if feelings preceded emotions then she would have reported feeling sad BEFORE crying due to the stimulation of her brain associated with sadness which would then disprove his hypothesis, also the fact that this event can be repeated as per the dictates of the scientific method is also used has evidence to confirm that emotions precede feelings.
