Body states and body maps
Explain what Damasio means by a body state and by a body map. What is the fundamental difference between the two. Describe the basic role that each plays in the production of feelings
Body state is when ones feelings match their body expression physically. An example is if you are told bad news about something, your body’s expression is going to show the way you are feeling, which in this case would be sad. What body map means is a geographic map of what is happening inside your body (senses what is going on inside your body). For example if something had happened then the individual would show sad negative feelings because of how they feel about the situation that just happened.
The difference between the body state and the body map is that the body map tends to experience the feelings a lot more compared to the body state. What the body state does is recognize the feelings that one is going through, and then that’s when the body map uses those feelings and expresses them physically. Back to the example with the sad news, firstly the individual who is being told about the bad news could feel confused, shocked, frustrated and so many other negative feelings. After the body state shows the feelings the individual then goes into the body map which just shows the true feelings that the person is feeling (negative sad feelings)
