Domasio was unclear regarding the fact whether or not emotions are innate because it is both innate and yet not.
Emotions are experienced by many from all around the world. Emotions are innate, but emotions can also be influenced and triggered by one's environment.
Domasio refers to emotions as primary emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, etc.) being innate while the secondary emotions are those learned (jealousy).
An example would be when an infant monkey witnesses a matured monkey being frightened by a snake. Odds are, the infant monkey will be frightened when encountered by a snake as well.
An example of emotions being triggered by one's environment is when if an individual gets severely bullied at school, which can lead to ones fear of going to school.
