Damasio makes reference to the concept of conatus as it is a tendency that is prevalent in all creatures to self preserve and is laid down in brain circuity but can also be found in organisms that do not have a brain yet still rely on it in other ways (available senses, certain responses to environment, steep temp. drop or rise, etc), it is what drives us towards things that are considered good for us and stay away from harmful or "strained life states", however he also makes a point that a person who is in throes of sadness or depressed is being cut off from his or her conatus which can lead to them being drawn toward those strained life states that they would usually stay away and even a sense of giving up on life altogether. this 17th century concept is directly related to the biological and psychological aspect since it is something innate and most of the time we aren't aware of it however it does affect out emotions and feelings.
