In Damasio's definition of "feeling" he outlines 3 necessary conditions which a living organism must meet to actually be able to "feel" the us humans feel. Firstly, an organism must have a nervous system so the somatosensing brain areas can receive information about the status of the body at all times. Secondly, each and every cell in the body must have the homeostatic processes of constantly trying to bring themselves and the cells around them into a stability that will promote life and long term survival of the body. Finally, the organism must have consciousness. It must be able to have an understanding of its thought pathway and the fact that it exists and can experience emotions. Consciousness is a level of awareness above emotion because emotions can be non-conscious, almost all living organisms have emotion from Damasio's standpoint. If an organism has all there of these traits, it is safe to say the feel in the sense that we do, their brain has a body mapping system in which they can experience and "feel" how their life is being sustained in every part of the body, or if they are lacking something essential in the body.
