Going out to a upscale restaurant, one has many degrees of freedom. The possibilities are endless when it comes to behaviour and attire. The vast majority of the population however will choose to dress up in their best clothing and conduct themselves in a proper way, for example maintaining a reasonable volume level and appropriate conversation content. Individuals who choose to act in this manner are aware of the behaviour expected and abide by these unwritten rules. These unwritten rules are created by a set of common values as well as cultural norms practiced in specific settings, in this case an upscale restaurant. If instead someone walked into a fast food restaurant they wouldn't be expected to act in the same way as they would walking into a high end restaurant, but a set of values and norms still exist, and most choose to follow them. People may choose to follow these values and norms for a variety of reasons, for example they are afraid of getting into trouble, they are trying to impress someone, or they simply want to fit in.
