According to the author, emotions are innate, in a sense that all organisms will be able to take the appropriate actions or behaviours for survial due to the automatic regulating system inside of the organism.
However, some innate emotions need to be triggered to be activated, which are still innate in some way because it is not being conditioned through multiple trials for learning to associate the behaviors with stimuli, but it lasts forever just after one time being triggered.
The example in the book is the moneky being afraid of snakes. The baby monkey wasn't afraid of snakes to being with, but was suddenly so scared of snakes once it saw how adult monkeys reacted to snakes.
