Cultural relativism is the idea that there is no valid universal criteria upon which to judge different cultural practices, and is associated with multi-cultural policy-the idea that any individual that immigrates to a country that has multiculturalism as a part of its policies should be able to practice their respective ancestral culture. The conflict therein is that this is in direct opposition with the ideas advocated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which seeks to defend the fundamental human rights of every individual, regardless of country of origin, and there are certain cultures that have conflicting values and are oppressive to certain individuals. An example would be the oppression of women in certain fundamentalist Islamic cultures, in those cultures it is a norm for women to wear religious garb that covers the face and body and not to participate in sports- but this is something that does inhibit women from living fulfilling lives and is oppressive and therefore is something that would be contested in the UDHR.
