When surgery is required for severe epilepsy, areas of the brain need to be specifically targeted prior to removal. In the case of patient A.K., Drs had stimulated the left frontal lobe (aka suplementary motor area) and surprisingly the patient was overwhelmed with an uncontrollable bout of laughter. While this seemed geniune, it was out of the blue, and A.K. still reported FEELING slightly happier afterwords. While these locations in the brain are not known to execute emotions related to laughter, it was deduced that these areas relayed this triggering stimulus to a separate execution area of the brain, and was treated as a genuine ECS. This suggests 2 things; 1. the production of emotions is a multi-tiered process, and 2. It is possible to intervene at different stages of this pathway.
