Demassio thinks its valuable to differentiate between emotions and feelings because the former can be attributed to the simplest of living organisms and is reactive in nature whereas feelings are restricted to conscious being who are capable of both recognizing stimulus (internal and external) while acting on them in a way that is beneficial for survival.
Through his explainantion of the process of generating emotion, it does make sense that a given ECS may have either a learned or innate pattern of reactions/behaviours associated with them, and that you are only able to generate conscious feeling once these emotions have occurred. It is hard to think of a scenario where I might generate a conscious feeling without exhibiting physiological signs associated to my thoughts.
Demassio states that feeling is not a passive process with the purpose of differentiating the concept from a reactive emotion. Whereas an organism may react to a given ECS without having the capacity to think about it, Humans are capable of recognizing our emotions, and have the ability to infuence our feelings through conscious thought
