Damasio defines feeling as " the perception of a certain state of the body along with the perception of a certain mode of thinking and of thoughts with certain themes",(p 86). An example of Damasio's definition can be a person who has a increased heartbeat and perspiration rate, due to being alone in the forest, coming across a bear, which the individual associates with danger. Damasio believes that the feeling would arise when the amount of mapped details reached a certain stage, which would occur as part of the ongoing homeostatic process. Damasio emphasized that he did not believe that feelings were thoughts with certain themes, but rather thoughts that represented the body because of its reactionary process. In the example given, the body state was one where the individual had an increased heart beat rate and also an increased perspiration rate, and the individual's thoughts upon his sight of the bear caused feeling(s). The bodily state (portrayed in the brain's body maps) is said to be the content of the perceptions that can constitute feelings in an individual.
