From my personal experience I believe emotions are innate. This does not mean they can not be triggered by others factors such as the environment. These can play a big role on an individual. During lecture we discussed about a monkey observing an adult monkey being afraid of snakes and ever since then they have been afraid as well which is taken as a sign of survival. This is the environment setting off an innate fear into the monkey due to the fact that there was a snake there. If they were in an environment where snakes do not live. the monkey would never interact an adult monkey being scared of the snake. So memories plays a big part in survival and these emotion we see from parents are being observed because we want to survive just like them. This means we have an innate response inside of us to learn the emotions of other adults

Can you expand more on the insight of Damasio and what he views emotion to be?
