Conatus is defined as a relentless endeavour to maintain a state of coherence, this is made reference of in the book as Damasio seeks to highlight how this phenomenon and homeostasis intertwine. Conatus is innate in the same way that homeostasis is innate and both have the goal of ensuring the self-preservation of an organism. From a biological perspective, he is referring to the brains circuitry and how the body is built in a manner that allows it to automatically act in the best interest of the organism to maintain balance needed for its survival or state of coherence of its structure. This biological processes then allow for neural pathways that produce the emotions and feelings that functions unconsciously to ensure that external stimulus activates a response that will allow for homeostasis when a threat is perceived.
