Explain in more detail Damasio's hypothesis about what a feeling is (p. 86) - for example elaborate the hypothesis with examples of what is meant by "perception", "certain state of the body", "certain mode of thinking", etc.
Feeling is defined by damasio as the perception of change in bodily states by the brain due to emotionally competent stimuli. As the body reacts with the external environment, certain stimuli can cause changes in bodily states which changes physiological conditions. The totality of change in bodily states is the body map and is perceived by the somatosensory regions of the brain. This operative definition of feeling assumes that the brain is necessary for feeling. The effect of feelings can change our mode of thinking to where it can be limited by feelings of sadness or enhanced by feelings of happiness. Feelings can perpetuate thoughts associated with that feeling as well as bring about past experiences related to that feeling. An example would be sadness where our cognition become vastly limited to thoughts of sadness as well as any experiences that may have caused the feeling of sadness in the past.
