Damasio says that emotions and feelings play a role in our decision making because when we are put in a situation that needs a decision made we do so based on emotions tied to prior situations. When we made a decision in the past that either led to punishment or reward (sorrow and joy), we then experienced an emotional response (did it feel good or feel bad) during that event. This can either be in terms of future outcome vs immediate outcome. (longer term vs short term). Different options and situations become associated with emotions (come across similar situations the emotions are triggered.)
For example, I go to work to get a paycheque. short term negative feelings about going to work are overcome by a more positive feelings. receiving money to be able to enjoy pleasurable activities.
