For damasio, feelings serve important functions in human behavior. For damasio, feelings evolved through evolution because they facilitated human survival and reproduction. They do this by alerting us of our emotional state. When we lose something important to us, our bodily response may be one of sadness, our shoulders may drop, our eyes may lower, and via the somatosensory cortex we may come to actually feel sad. The feeling of sadness is uncomfortable and motivates us to act to change our feeling, perhaps by trying to restore what we lost. Thus our feelings help motivate action and in turn serve as an adaptive mechanism
