Damasio outlines how he believes that feelings are at the core of morality; they are moral compasses that provide an organism with an innate sensibility that facilitates integration and cooperation between members of the same species which ultimately increases the chance of survival for the individual organism and the species as a whole. Damasio emphasizes the extreme value of cooperation in the process of evolution, rather then the more common focus placed on competition/survival of the fittest, and describes the role of feelings as being the biological basis on which a system of cooperation can be built and maintained within a species.
