Q: Damasio raises the question, "How could emotion and feeling play a role in decision-making?" (p 145). Summarize his answer to this question and provide an example of a more-or-less mundane decision in your own experience that might illustrate Damasio's idea.
A: Damasio states that over time human being accumulated emotion-related experiences, these experiences and the associated feelings are stored as reference points for future decision making allowing individuals to determine what outcomes would be most favourable and as such what decision would present such an outcome. Also, individuals would then evaluate the facts of the problem to determine what their available options are for solving them, evaluate the potential outcome of each option that is available and evaluates the outcomes emotional and feelings related implication. This way they can determine what is the best decision to make, as though prior experience is beneficial it is always available.
A mundane event where this can be illustrated can be choosing between going to a social event with a particular friend or studying for an upcoming test. You evaluate the options, followed by evaluating the potential outcome of either decision, social event may result in being too tired to study for my test but I would have fun or I will study for my test because I can always go to an event at another time and I will not be happy if I receive a lower score. Then we can bring in feelings and emotions to present a state of further clarity as to which decision would allow a greater state of pleasure in the end and result in pleasure associated feelings for a longer period, the party or my grades. One can also think about how they felt in the past because of an unsatisfactory grade versus how they felt about going to an event with the friend for reference and choose accordingly.
