The basic idea is that emotional processes guide behaviour, particularly decision-making. "Somatic markers" are feelings in the body that are associated with emotions, such as the association of rapid heartbeat with anxiety or of nausea with disgust. Evidence, Damsio states that the emotional signal can operate entirely under the radar of consciousness. One example that Damasio uses is the emotion of feeling frightened. An example of this is scary music playing in horror movies. The scary music creates build up in the situation that results in someone’s reaction of being scared.
