Somatic marking takes place in the prefrontal cortex of the brain and it is the concept of how our feelings that are associated with our emotional reactions are placed in our brain to help us with our decision making. In other words, we tend to evaluate the situations that we are in depending on the reactions built in our emotion. So in can be said that the somatic marking process is able to help us survive as a species by giving us the signal of how to deal with a situation. For instance, if in the past a dog has bitten you then you are likely to build a fear of dogs. So when you are to encounter a dog in the future, you are likely to remove yourself from the situation to prevent the chances of being attacked again. In my opinion, I think for a second we are are not aware of it occurring because it happens quite sudden. This then makes it seem like we have made a reasonable decision in the moment. However, after the occurrence I for one believe that we start to realize that the decision made could have possibly be influenced by past experiences.
