Organisms capable of feelings are able to more quickly evaluate situations and make decisions leading to joy instead of sadness. The mind allows us to categorize events in our life and then recall them when posed with a new situation. The memories we recall are categorized by outcome and we can take situations that are similar and use them to guide us to joy by conforming to past actions with positive outcomes, and avoiding decisions that lead to negative outcomes. This allows us to decide much faster without having to go through all possibilities of each decision we make, as well as pushing us toward beneficial decisions based on a prediction the mind makes composed of previous actions and outcomes. Having a sense of self helps with orientating manipulated memories to benefit the self, promoting survival and well-being, as we must be aware of our existence and to be able to distinguish ourselves from others to do so.
