In book, Damasio mentioned three requirements that a organism to have feelings.
1. An entity capable of feeling must be an organism that not only has a body but also a means to represent that body inside itself.
It means the body is basic furnished, and the brain has to provide body maps which is represent parts of out bodies the states of bodies.
2. The nervous system must be able to map body structures and body states and transform the neural patterns in those maps into mental patterns or images.
This definition rise to "mental" level. Neural patterns are not enough to form feelings. Mental patterns and mental images are the ultimate target that can represent ourselves. It always comes after neural patterns. 3. The occurrence of a feeling in the traditional sense of the term requires that its contents be known to the organism. Consciousness is a requirement.
It means consciousness is the basis of feeling. We can't have feelings without consciousness. But also feelings it self contribute to the process of consciousness.
Overall, Body, brain, feeling can't work without any of each. Brain is a part of body and work with neural system to map body structures and states. There needs to transfer the body maps and neural patterns into mental images.
