Damasio says the most important thing is yearning for a meaningful life and this is not a choice that people make, rather it is a natural extension of the homeostatic principle from biology. Damasio is trying to ground that humanistic striving is the same thing as homeostasis. So this striving is a deep trait of the human mind because it is grounded in the biological principles of homeostasis. We are yearning to restore balance of our well being and this yearning is human nature because of evolution. Furthermore, Damasio suggested that we replace the stimuli that promote those negative emotions with ECS for joy and this I agree with. For example, when I feel down about something, I try to replace those thoughts with positive ones to try to make myself feel better, and this results in a more content life.
