Damasio appreciates spinoza’s point of view that mind and body are two aspects of the same thing. Spinoza’s view reflected the perspective of aspect dualism, such that that the mind and body were concieved as being two parts of the same thing, rather than two entirely separate things. This ran contrary to the viewpoint of descartes which was one of substance dualism, purporting that the mind and body are two separate things rather than two components of one whole.
