In Chesterton's anecdote about the invisible postman, a murder was committed inside a house guarded by four people. The murdered victim was alone in the house and the guards claimed that no one had entered or exited the house during that time. However, this wasn't true. The postman had gone inside, killed the victim, then left in plain sight. The guards had all looked at the postman but didn't "see" him because he didn't fit the identity that they expected for the murderer.
Damasio claims that the body is invisible with respect to its relevance to the mind. Past philosophers have looked at the body but they do not "see" it. Substance dualism presents the concept that the body is physical matter while the mind is not. The mind-body problem arises from this type of view that separates the mind and the body. Descartes claimed that the mind and body interacted and influenced each other but never really explained how this interaction occurs (other than through the pineal gland). He believed that the mind was separate from all other material substance so it could continue to live on after the body no longer existed. One of the most modern views is that the mind and brain go together on one side, and the body-proper (body minus the brain) is on the other side. Damasio explains that to find a solution behind the mind-body problem, there needs to be an understanding that the mind arises from the brain within the body-proper; the mind is grounded in the body-proper.
