According to Damasio, individuals tend to work towards having a contented life. He mentioned that individuals "yearn" to have a contended life.
Yearning refers to an intense feelings of longing for something and in this case, a contended life.
The connection he proposes is that when working towards a contented life, through an evolutionary view, it relates to ones survival.
Although Damasio focuses primarily on biological aspects, he mentioned that the ability to yearn is a trait of the human mind and body
Biologically speaking, he mentions that us as individuals tend to strive for this homeostasis sort of aspect when it come to a contented life where we try to maintain a balance in allowing us to feel content with our life.
For example, when we believe to not be socially accepted by others, in order to achieve the contented life, and to maintain a homeostasis, we would try to become accepted by adapting to the cultural norms in order to feel content and to become socially accepted by others.
