In his book Damasio introduces the idea of foundational images. This term refers to the image one has of collective body maps that occur to a wide range of regions (deep in body, sensory regions, etc) and their respective neural activity which trace back to a certain stimulus. This stimulus can be anything and upon every encounter the same bodily response arises and thus the same image. As time goes by and experiences are enhanced these images in the stream of the mind might expand or alter but certain fundamental images are always present. An analogy to this can be a database to certain stimuli and fundamental images the initial "data" accumulated.
