Damasio is referring to neural patterns as being like building blocks. Our brain is a builder that constructs the images of the objects we experience. It does this so we are able to have an awareness of the environment around us. The images that are being produced are representations of the objects, but not their mirror reflections. Basically, we see the world around us as well, as our neural patterns allow us.
There are animals that are capable to hear an ultrasound, animals capable of echolocation, animals capable of seeing ultraviolet rays. We have scientific tools to detect these phenomena, but we do not have abilities to experience/observe them ourselves since our brain does not have necessary building blocks to produce such images for us. What we consider to be a reality is in fact just a subjective representation of it, created by our brain to the best of its abilities, and is not the actual reality that is much greater than we are capable to perceive.
