It is actually very true that we are not aware of our own cultural norms until we visit a new place, particularly a new country. For example, when I travelled to Pakistan last year, I realized the things that I do that I consider a norm, people in Pakistan found weird. For example, when I would see a nice person looking at me in Pakistan, I would wave and smile. My cousins used to get upset and make fun of me. I would be so confused. They said waving and looking at other people is bringing unwanted attention and calling for trouble. This simply did not make sense to me. In Canada, waving and smiling at people is considered polite. This was just one of the weird experiences I had that made me realize how different the norms are in different places. Also, made me realize how deeply routed my norms are in my personality and understanding.
