Butt believed that if conscious was an issue when it comes to theories of personality, then the unconscious is an even bigger one. He says that people are often puzzled about their own actions and more so when it comes to neurotic behavior. On the other end of the spectrum, there are people that deny their characteristics and personality. Both types of people actually repeat these types of behavior, and it can't be denied that these actions are based off of our unconscious. Butt says that all characteristic patters in behavior occurs in the unconscious. Butt claims that in order to understand our lives, we have to make sense of unconscious phenomena.
