In respect to reason and emotion, Damasio alludes the goals of Spinoza to Freud's psychoanalytic project because both Spinoza and Freud's psychoanalytic beliefs are based on the assertion that we as humans are heavily influenced by our unconscious on the way we regulate reason and emotion. Freud believed that humans are more irrational than rational based on presence of the unconscious within our minds, and this can be compared in similarity to how the goals of Spinoza are related to how our minds (the cognitive aspect) represses our bodily urges (which are thought to be natural, as also stated by Freud).
