Freedom is only given to an individual that is responsible. We often forget about that, because we blame others for not having the right freedom that we think we deserve. We are responsible for what we do and what we say. This is why we can't achieve complete freedom. Not due to systemic oppression or anything along that line ("social norm"). When an individual gets up in the middle of the class and start dancing without any clothes on, it's his or her responsibility to accept what is going to happen next, because the outcome can be either positive (become popular) or negative (become unpopular). Being embarrassed or anxious to accomplish such task has nothing to do with social construction and has everything to do with fear of the unknown and the self. Another example; Asking someone to go on a date. We have the freedom to approach and ask but most of us choose not to because we don't know what the outcome will be. This is why we become anxious and ultimately prevent our own freedom.
In my opinion, blaming social oppression or the norms for limiting our freedom is a very arrogant approach. If freedom is truly jeopardized, why are we not risking our lives to regain freedom?
