Pragmatism; is the view that assesses the truth of meaning of theories or beliefs in terms of the success of their practical application. Butt suggests that social constructions shouldn't be based on their universal effectiveness. Instead, Truth no longer becomes the issue, the question is for whom is this concept useful for and what are the related conditions. Utility and usefulness is the concern associated with interpretive social constructs.
Hermeneutics; Was originally used to describe the practice of interpreting sacred text into contemporary meanings (ie in the bible) . Today its not only to do with interpretation of texts, but also interpreting individual actions/interactions as they reveal how social constructs have permeated their normative values.
Discourse and discourse analysis; Discourse is any kind of public dialogue, that might not just be at the individual level that serve as the narrative within a society, ie approaches between government groups/ municipal parties, messages in the media. Discourse analysis is the concept of critically analyzing the effect that a particular discourse has on shaping individuals within a given society, and its effect on their norms and values.
Agency; The capacity for free will. According to Gergen, the light side of social constructionism assumes individuals have more agency to help shape normative values within society. In contrast the dark side sees individuals being 'carried away in the tide of the discourse' without agency.
Internalisation: How social constructions or the associated discourse shapes the individual. Butt says this may happen without directly verbalizing generally accepted rules or norms within a social construct (ie children understanding family dynamics through observation)
externalisation: Ho someone imposes an effect or helps to shape the social construct or societal norms that they are a part of. Butt says Protesting is a way to externailize normative views and challenge accepted frameworks.
objectivation; an accepted term within the discourse or a product of discourse analysis that goes on to become an 'object' within a discussion, piece of language Ie ‘sexual harassment
Verstehen; is a soiology term that is an empathic understanding of human behavior. Originally it was used to describe early german psychologists who initially beleived in the merit of social constructionism
phenomenological: is related to understanding the way in which the world appears to us. Butt says it is good practice to set aside personal beleifs (bracketting), hear out the full description of the event/discussion, and lay all aspects out on an even plane without favoring one peice of info (horizontalization)
