Summarize the distinction that Butt makes between the light and dark forms of social construction.
Dark social construction refers to an individual as the subject of social structure/discourse. This idea suggests that individuals meaning systems are determined by the discourse that surrounds them. This deterministic/mechanistic explanation suggests individuals have no agency in their actions, rather is determined by the day-to-day discourse (language/conversations) surrounding the person. Light social construction model suggests a similar explanation for a person's behaviour, but that it also involves some decision-making from the individual. In the light social construction model, we make meaning on basis of discourse and ideas gained between conversation, but it is different than dark social construction because we learn from the discourse/observations and have the agency to intervene.
