The two approaches selected would be Kelly’s personal construct theory and Roger’s person-centered theory. Firstly, Kelly’s personal construct theory suggests that people develop personal constraints based on experiences and what we have observed. He explains that our views are either challenged or confirmed based on experiments. Roger’s person centered theory suggests that individuals have the ability to move toward self-actualization (self-fulfillment) when the right resources are available. This theory also involves the notion that peoples’ view of the world around them differs, where no two perspectives are the same.
The Roger’s person-centered theory would understand the psychological phenomena , “there are two Ebolians in my workgroup but I really can’t stand the way Ebolians are always so pushy” from an individualistic approach. They would say that the individual’s view of Ebolians is their own personal opinion and is independent of any other opinion. Whereas, Kelly’s personal construct theory would understand the situation by assuming the individual has a personal experience where they were being pushed around by an Ebolian. This experience has constructed their view of how they see Ebolians. This view is challenged when they experience another situation that changes their view of Ebolians. For example, if the individual is in a situation where Ebolians are not pushy, this would change their view.
In terms of changing the phenomenon, the Roger’s person-centered theory would suggest the individual to do a self-reflection and see why they think the way they do. Whereas, Kelly’s personal construct theory would suggest exposing the individual to different experiences to change how they view others instead of formulating judgement based on one isolated event.
