"I'm in terrible shape, I eat too many high fat foods and don't exercise"
Psychoanalytic approach (Freud) Using Freud's psychoanalytic approach we could theorize that perhaps this person has a negative self image due to past negative experiences which are repressed in the unconscious. And these negative feelings then manifest in the conscious mind as having a problem with body image and having low motivation.
Behaviourist Approach In the behaviourist approach we might examine this behaviour as a direct result of the environment, for example if the person has a stressful life situation we might hypothesize that the stress in the person's life is the stimulus which results in the response of eating.
these two approaches would differ in their approach to help change this phenomenon, because in the Freudian psychoanalytic approach, the goal of the psychologist would be to talk with the client and help them to bring the repressed negative feelings that have manifested in the unconscious to the forefront of the conscious mind so that the individual through therapy may be able to reverse these feelings of negative self image. And in the behaviourist method, the approach might be to reinforce a more positive and proactive response to stress such as meditation or yoga.
