The term Causal Science has a defined relationship with social constructionism, as described by Butt, especially if viewed as way of understanding social constructionism (SC) in contrast to causal science and dark SC, or viewing SC as a reaction to the ideas held up by this term. Causal science, in reference to psychology, is the idea that one could discover the cause or reason for psychological phenomena, and thereby extrapolate this cause and effect relationship to an understanding of some universal truth about the human experience. I would argue that light SC (where people are understood as having agency and create meaning through interactions with others and themselves), is better understood in contrast to the causal scientific approach of dark SC (a deterministic approach to SC that argues people do not have agency and meaning systems are static, and enforce meaning and actions upon the people who live within). Light SC, and SC in general is also a reaction to the traditional approach of causal science in psychology, arguing that there are no universal truths, only the perceptions people have of them.
