The primary distinctions between the idiographic and nomothetic approaches to studying personality is that the idiographic approach focuses mainly on an individual's characteristics of personality (separate). This approach is good because it can be used to find greater details on personality traits although you can not get a lot of case studies completed because it is so time-consuming, not only that it does not have a universal perspective. The nomothetic approach is mainly focused on the universal traits of personality. This approach is good because you can get a lot of case studies completed because of a larger group sample (more data) which can be used to make various conclusion for the greater population. Although this approach is very simplified and results obtained from the case study may or may not be relatable to an individual (subjective). Because of this, it makes this approach is more reductionist than the idiographic approach. Not only that the nomothetic approach is more atomistic because it breaks down personality into other fundamental sections. The idiographic approach is more individualistic because of its small sample size and its failure to address the population as a whole (only identifies the distinctive traits).
