Important differences between assimilation and multiculturalism policies:
Assimilation: When individuals start to see themselves as belonging to one national group (Americans) there will be greater in group cohesion and fewer opportunities for internal conflict. - When individuals start to see themselves as belonging to one national group (Americans) there will be greater in group cohesion and fewer opportunities for internal conflict. - Leads to a perception that "we are all alike", greater likelihood for positive relations. - For every person to enjoy equality of opportunity there must be a "level playing field".
Multiculturalism: - Minorities are positively motivated toward retaining their ancestral culture and language - Same immigrants may face discrimination in the adopted land, because of prejudice (race, religion etc) - Multiculturalism concerns "multiculturalism hypothesis" proposes that when members of a group feel pride and confidence in their own group heritage, they will be more open and accepting towards out groups.
