Psychoanalytic approach - Freud
Psychanalytic Approach - Object relations theories
Psychological Phenomenon: I continually procrastinate on really important school assignments; I always delay, delay, delay until the very last minute
Trying to understand the phenomenon: I think the psychoanalytic approach would try and understand the mind by using the Id, Ego, and Superego. Id operates on the pleasure principle demanding immediate gratification. Ego operates on the reality principle, satisfying the ids desire in ways that will realistically bring pleasure. Also being the median and keeping balance between the id and superego. The superego represents internalized ideals and provides standards for judgment and for future aspirations. I believe psychologist would say that the student has a weak ego which results in her leaning towards her id. Doing so she puts whatever desires she has over her responsibilities causing the delay of assignment completion. When trying to change the phenomenon perhaps the psychologist would try and help the student find a better means to strengthen their ego (if possible). Also maybe they would try and help the student conquer their desires with skillful techniques. Really focusing on the mind aspect of things.
I think the psychanalytic approach would try and understand the relationship the student may have with the teacher (ex. child and breast, love/hate relationship). Perhaps the bad relationship the student has with the teacher would make the student not want to complete their assignment (vice versa). If a student has good interaction with the teacher then they would develop a good relationship and skills (being more responsible and having time management). When trying to change the phenomenon I think the psychologist would try ways to strengthen the bond between the student and the teacher. For example, when an infant projects a negative feeling onto the objects (mother breasts) it then expects a negative feeling back. Perhaps this concept can work with positive feelings and maybe can help with the relationship between the student and teacher.
