In his book Butt argues that a true self would not be in line with the societies of prior times. Before the industrial revolution most individuals would live at their hometown of birth, probably in the same house, follow the profession of their father and marry according to their parents wishes. This has little to none agency and thus the individual has no true self and is just a replica of their parents. After the revolution people were relocated allowing to take different directions according to who they really were, due to having agency and as a result having their inner self identified and externalized.
