This is because, with the socks being washed, and the 'luck' being gone, the childs confidence reduces and throughout the game, he may not make the same moves, be as energetic or risky throughout because he no longer thinks he can do it without the luck of his socks. If you think you cant do something, you probably cant because your mind is in no position to push your body to do so. The other child believed he had the luck with him still, and once again did well, because he believed there was positivity to come out of wearing his unwashed socks, so his performance had more confidence, and he believed in his ability to do well, so he did.
