Butt says that “what ‘having a self’ means is having a constructive relationship to the past and the future” (p. 137). Explain what you think this quotation means. Explain why you think he includes the word “constructive” in his description.
The self can be conceptualized as a process rather than as a thing. According to Butt, the self is built from social processes so he emphasizes the social interaction. Accordingly, our past experiences influence and shape our identity and impacts our future. This is based on all the interactions we have had and the meanings constructed through these interactions.
