The self is the reflexive process and time is very important as it helps us in this process. The existential self has to do with the process of reflection of ourselves and others. Schneider was unable to locate himself in time and space and did not have a connection to the human order. He was unable to anticipate the future or reflect on the past. The past and the future influence us. Our actions in many cases depend on our reflection of the past, thus in order to reflect we need to be able to be connected to the past and future, which Schneider was not. Schneider remained in the pre-reflexive state, instead of in the reflective state where he was unable to think about the I (doer) and me (subject) and his body state.
