Self means that its his perspective because its how he sees it because every individual sees things from their own perspective meaning there are more then one truth. During the quote Butt uses the word "constructive" This is used because the only thing anyone can see from their own past is experience. Now constructive comes in due to the fact that we can only sue these experiences to construct a future and create a normative idea of what we want (goal). This relates them together but can not be compared. I see it as a step before moving on. In order to reach and prepare for your future you have to think about what you disliked in the past and what can be changed to achieve true happiness.
