What it means to have a self
Butt says that “what ‘having a self’ means is having a constructive relationship to the past and the future” (p. 137). Explain what you think this quotation means. Explain why you think he includes the word “constructive” in his description.
According to Butt, "having self" means that we should fully understand ourselves in context of the past and future experiences. Our past experiences contribute into helping us create possible solutions to problems that may arise in the future. Our past experiences allow us to construct options and strategies on how should we deal with it and how can we stop in making it happen again. It is constructive in a sense that our memory from the past speaks to the actions that we do in the future that affects our relationship and how we interact with other people.
