A Schema is a kind of framework for one's perspective, learning, and behaviour. As one grows older and experiences new situation, the schema either grows or changes to fit the situation that they are in. The example used in class was how a baby does not have the schema yet to understand that objects still exist when you cannot see them. As a baby gets older and begins to understand this concept, their schema will consequently grow.
The reason this is a cognitive idea rather than behaviourist is because there is no reward/punishment aspect associated with events and there is not always a cause and effect concerning one's schema. While a behaviourist would say that one builds their knowledge and place in the world through classical conditioning, the cognitive view would be simply that having new experiences creates new pathways in the brain that will greater expand one's knowledge.
